LONG LIVE THE KING(BIRD)

I was showing a quartet of visiting birders some of the avian highlights of Ashland this morning.  They were staying in a guest house bordered by a creek on one side and horse pasture on the other.  Four pushy Western Kingbirds were in the trees and in the air.  Their voices sound like electric static or audio tape played in fast forward (kids can ask their parents what audio tape is, or was).  These were my first kingbirds of the season.  All hail the tyrannical kingbird, ruler of all he can see. Our misses on the day included Screech-Owl along Granite Street, Western Bluebird and Lewis’s Woodpecker at Emigrant Lake. The thumnails shots are American Wigeon male, Doublepcrested Cormorant, Red-winged Blackbird, White-throated Sparrow, Dipper. The first four are at Ashland Pond, the Dipper near its nest at the Swimming Reservoir on Ashland Creek.
