Point Reyes Bird Observatory has been able to document where and how the Golden-crowned Sparrows migrate. This species is one of the mpost abundant wintering birds in southern Oregon and coastal California. They breed in wet forests much further north along the Pacific Slope. Four tagged birds that wintered in Central California were found to breed in Alaska.  Click here to read about the research findings. The Golden-crowns that are here in southern Oregon now are beginning to sing their three-note song. Many are in final stages of molting their new, pristine crown feathers, and they will be migrating northward soon.

  1. Bird migration always fascinated me.. a mystery of how birds know where exactly to go and why travel such long distances when you have similar places nearby!
