There were some birds at Sanctuary One today.  It is not a bird sanctuary, it is a haven for rescued domestic animals that have been abandoned or abused and that are brought here by law enforcement.  Sanctuary One is a scenic ranch on Upper Applegate Road about a mile below Applegate Lake Dam.

There was this clear evidence of Red-breasted Sapsuckers in the bark of two venerable fruit trees, but no sign of that species today.

The ranch is on the Applegate River which is where I saw the Kingfisher.

SANCTUARY ONE, Jackson, US-OR Feb 2, 2012 10:30 AM.  13 species.

Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)  6.. Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)  1. Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon)  1. Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus)  1. Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)  1. Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri)  9. Western Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica)  6. Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus)  1. Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula)  1. American Robin (Turdus migratorius)  7. Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus)  1. Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)  1. Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)  35.

The ranch is bordered on the west by the Applegate River, on the north and east by the Rogue River National Forest.  Trees here are black oak, white oak, tanoak, madrone, Douglas-fir and Ponderosa pine.  In shaded areas Oregon grape is the underbrush while the sunb-burnt soukth sloppes are sparsely covered by oak and ceanothus.  On the north side of the ranch little Mule Creek runs down from the slopes of Mule Mountain which rise to over 3500′.  Just southeast of the ranch is Litte]le Gryaback which rises over 5000′.  So it sits right at the foot of the Siskiyous as they surround the Upper Applegate River Valley.  The goal is to research the local birds and put together a checklist for Sanctuary One visitors.

  1. Good Morning Harry,

Please define “Bird Sanctuary.” It seems to me that birds have the freedom to avoid fences. Hunters, propellers (planes & windmills), jet intakes are the human created enemies. Thanks

  2. Good Morning Harry,
We have a new species I haven’t seen before visiting our feeders. He is mostly black with a brown band across his forehead and 2 brown stripes down his back, he has a peeping song, I think. His behavior is funny as he seems to eat the seed then peck at the tree like he is putting them there…can you tell me what he is? Thanks a bunch, Donna Clark

  3. It is not a bird sanctuary, it is an abused and abandoned animal sanctuary. the birds just fly in for a visit or to live !
