THE NEXT DAY…AFTER ASHLAND CHRISTMAS COUNT

110–species for entire Ashland Christmas Bird Count.  Last year we had 106.  Species that did not recur include Band-tailed Pigeon, Say’s Phoebe, Eurasian Wigeon and Lazuli Bunting.  Better weather this year helped us add species: Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, Shoveler, Eared Grebe, Red Crossbill, Spotted Sandpiper, Virginia Rail (that’s one we may not get often in the future).  My team worked the Emigrant Lake area and we had 64 species including a Snow Goose and more than 100 Cacklers.

And we had the only California Towhees on the count this year.  They responded to the played-back calls of California QUAIL. They all speak the same Californian dialect?

Here’s one of the Varied Tghrush we found along Old Hwy 99 south, at about 3000′ under the wet canopy of Douglas fir and incense cedar.

And here’s a Yellow-shafted Flicker (the eastern race of flicker) that Alan Contreras found at the Ashland Dog Park. And this is what it looked like around the Peterson’s feeders at the north end of Emigrant Lake.  There were siskins, Lesser Goldfinch, Oak Titmouse, myriad Juncos, Scrub Jays, an Acorn Woodpecker, and finally our only chickadee of the day.
