BIRDING ALONG I-5

This past week I spent some time birding locations along I-5 between Ashland and Tacoma.

Female Surf Scoter in Westmoreland Park, SE Portland.  That’s at least sixty miles from the ocean.  There have been reports of Surf Scoters here in Jackson County recently and that’s even further from the sea.

Ring-necked Ducks in small pond just outside Oakland, OR.

White Pelicans on Plat 1 Reservoir east of Sutherlin, OR.

Long-billed Dowitchers at Plat 1.

Red-tailed Hawk in one of the many grass fields of LInn County, Oregon–grass seed capital of the world.

The best stops were Ankeny and Nisqually National Wildlife Refuges. One near Salem, Oregon.  The latter near Olympia, WA.  More pictures from the trip in future posts.
