This currently active Killdeer nest is in the parking lot by the barn at Cougar Run Ranch south of Ashland.  It’s at about 2500′ elevation on the lower slopes of the Siskiyou Mountains.  The photo was taken by Susan Larson, ranch owner and Killdeer-admirer.  Horses from the barn will be led around the nest where these eggs will be for another three weeks or more.  The hatchlings then be running almost immediately, flying only much later.  So it’s good the nest is on the ground.  This ground-nesting strategy obviously works because there are many Killdeer here, and across North America.

Eggs are about the same diameter as a U.S. quarter coin.
