John J. Audubon (his French name altered to fit American language) was born this day in 1785 in Haiti.  His father was French, his mother the Haitian mistress.  Audubon spent most of his younger years in France and was sent hither to avoid the military service being required to continue the unending Napoleonic Wars of the time.  Here is Google’s way of honoring America’s most famous, romantic bird artist:
