JACKSON COUNTY FIELD TRIPS

I have three free field trips coming up this month in Jackson County, OR.  Here’s the rundown:

Saturday, Mar 5, 2011 Description: KBO Bird Walk to Emigrant Lake

Come along with us and spot waterfowl, wading birds, raptors, and songbirds wintering at this Ashland Lake. Emigrant Lake is a Southern Oregon birding hotspot where Golden Eagle, Canyon and Rock Wren can be spotted year round. Bring a spotting scope if you have one. Meet at 8:00 am at Northwest Nature Shop (Ashland). Leader: Harry Fuller, KBO member and volunteer. Limited to 15 participants. To register, call 541-482-3241.

Saturday, Mar 12, 2011 Description:  KBO Bird Walk to Agate Lake

Agate Lake’s an important wintering and stopover habitat for a variety of bird species in the Rogue Valley. Join us as we look for raptors, waterfowl and shorebirds along the lake, and for resident songbirds in the surrounding fields and oak woodlands. We are likely to see both Lewis’ and Acorn Woodpecker, Great Egret, possibly Northern Harrier and, if we’re lucky, White-Tailed Kite. Leader: Harry Fuller, KBO volunteer and member. Meet at 8:00 am at Wild Birds Unlimited (Medford). Limited to 15 participants. To register, call 541-770-1104.

This Short-eared Owl pic was taken by Peter Kreisman at Medford Airport in December, 2010.  We hope the small flock wintering there will still be around in late March.

ROGUE VALLEY AUDUBON FIELD TRIP:  MARCH 19TH

Let’s meet at 830AM for a field trip to Whetstone Savannah and then make time for stop at Medford Airport to see if we can find the wintering Short-eared Owls.  We hope to find wintering raptors, beat the bushes for some unusual sparrows and enjoy the mixture of grasslands and oak woodland at Whetstone Savannah, a Nature Conservancy property.

Meet at 830 in unpaved parking lot east from Exit 33 from I-5 at Central Point. The lot”s across from the CP gasoline station.  We will carpool from there.
