Medford Christmas Count

Some images from our section of the Medford Christmas Bird Count.  We have the southeast portion of the count circle, mostly east of Foothill Blvd. (North Phoenix Road) into the Cascades and all of Roxy Ann mountain which tops at 3600′.

Bird images from upper left: 2 of Evening Grosbeaks at Edith Lindner’s feeders.  Acorn Woodpecker.  Red-tailed Hawk. Spotted Towhee.  Mourning Dove and Golden-crowned Sparrow.  Western Bluebird male.  Waxwings 3 in the early morning fog.  Best bird of the day for us may have been the Barn Owl that Edith drove from his bed by banging on a pole atop which the owl slept in an owl box.  But his loss of sleep was our gain.  It was our onlu owl in Area D though we tried numerous times to rouse a Pygmy-Owl

Below is list of the birds my group of three saw on CBC day, Dec. 18.  The other three members of our team saw many of these birds plus 14 we didn’t get.  So our Area D team contributed 71 species.  The whole Medford count this year came up with 131 according to CBC chief, Bob Hunter.
