Hummingbirds Have Own Reality TV Show, 24-7

Two Allen’s Hummingbirds are newly hatched and performing daily, along with their assiduous mother, on camera. Live from a channel island off Orange County shore. Click here for the great show.

For land-locked Oregonians, the Allen’s is the nearest cousin to our locally breeding Rufous Hummingbird. As always, the male hummer is literally and figuratively not in the picture once nesting and chick-raising ensues.  Netcams are wonderful.  This particular camera allows you to see the hummer family activity on a scale that can be magnified several times, with the adult female bird looking almost as big as a bluebird.  That’s on a computer screen.   Imagine her projected onto a forty-inch plasma…
