Leaving Malheur…for now

This lekking, displaying male Sage Grouse image did not come off some naturte calendar.  It is one of the pics taken on ouyr last morning at Malheur by Kathy Simonsen, one of four intrepid birders who got up at dawn and drove over 8 mmiles ona rugged mountain track to get to the lek, and thus witness ther spring dance of the male Sage Grouse.  The Sage Grouse made our group’s species total exactly 105.  This bird is one of three that I personally missed.  Too lazy for the 6AM wake-up call.

This is one of a pair of Cassin’s Finches–the only ones we found–singing at Sage Hen Hill Rest Stop as we drove west from Burns toward home.  Also a -pair of Mountain Bluebirds were there inspecting the nest boxes.  A rest stop with nest boxes!   More Malheur pics and a complete trip list as oon as I get time.
