Give Us This Day Our Daily Owl

Owl was calling last night not far from our partially opened bedroom window, around 10:30 PM.  “Tooot…tooot…too, too, too, too, too, too.”  Repeat as required.  I heard no answering toots for a mate.  The Screech-Owl is a late nester, waiting for the maximum insect population which will come with much warmer nights.  Right now our overnight low is well below 40 degrees, not optimum for noctural insect action and population growth.  More moths means more meals for hungrey little Screecher-creatures.

A construction truck was parked right in front of his nest hole, allowing me to get well above street level and neared to owl’s eye level.

When you can see his eyes, they’re a flame yellow and convey whatever his intention is at the moment, everything from casual disinterest to furious disgust if a dog happens to be nearby.  The jays no longer even notice this owl, ignoring him rather than suffer the ignominy of energetic mobbing, only to be shunned when the owl climbs down into his hole and goes back to sleep.  Jay pride will be served.
