Last of Howard Prairie, until this weekend

There’s another canoe trip planned for Howard Prairie for this weekend,a nd some rain predicted, so who knows?  Meanwhile, I’m wanting to get all the decent photos published before there are even more.sandhill duo1

Love those Sandhill Cranes.  If I could believe in reincarnation, just once to fly at thirty thousand feet, feel the echoing bugle call through my two foot throat, slop around in the wet soil coating my feathers until they turn to rust, feel deep in my DNA those instincts that eons have honed, to dance on limber limbs in tall summer grasses, to know what it is to be a crane…HP lakeview

IMG_9680Two loafin Caspian Terns.  They’ll winter somewhere from Los Angeles to South America.  A long migration but not a patch onthe circumnavigation of the Western Hemisphere that smaller Arctic Terns do each year.  Thesebirds are found in the Old World, hence the “Caspian” name.YngMtBlue

This slender fellow was undulating along the beach, one of our water-going garter snakes here in the west.  Where I grew up in the Midwest our garter snakes were strictly dry land creatures, not caring to compete with water snakes, water moccasins and snapping turtles.

THE HOWARD PRAIRIE BLOG SEQUENCE:   1) CHECKLIST AND FIRSAT CRANE PICS .  My best Vesper Sparrow pic ever.   2) HOWARD PRAIRIE, PART 2, GREAT PICS FROM CANOE OF SHOREBIRDS .  Also great shot comparing Least and Western Sandpipers.        3) HOWARD PRAIRIE, PART 3, MY BEST RB SAPSUCKER PICS AND DOWITCHERS
