This picture was taken by Dan Elster on our second attempt at getting close enough to the owls for a good picture. The good eyes, great hearing and ability to fly much faster than we can walk, make them a difficult photo subject. Clearly this owl had both eyes on the ground-hugging biped as it flew past.
SE Owls are up to sixteen inches in length, wingspan can reach four feet so those wings are as proportionately long as they appear in this photo. And their soft owl feathers make their flight silent, of course.

The expression is so rare, it almost looks photoshopped on although I know it’s not. Great shot.
