There is no plumage difference between genders. One field guide says they gather in groups where prey is abundant, explainging the gang out at the Medford Airport. And these owls roost on the ground, just like 747s.
The Short-eared owl exhibits subtle sexual dimorphism. The female is slightly larger and darker overall. The male appears more “washed out” by comparison. This species is attracted to areas of high Microtine density [Microtus is the genus that includes many western vole species, editor’s note].
